Description

Slow Cooker Southern Green Beans simmer with smoky ham hocks, tender fresh beans, and savory broth for classic Southern comfort food. Perfect for Sunday dinner or holiday tables.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 2 smoked ham hocks
  • 6 cups low-sodium chicken stock
  • 2 teaspoons granulated garlic
  • ¼ yellow onion, small diced
  • ½ tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes, or hot sauce to taste
  • 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar, to taste

Instructions

  1. Trim and rinse green beans thoroughly.
  2. Add green beans, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes to the slow cooker.
  3. Place ham hocks on top and pour chicken stock over the mixture.
  4. Cook on LOW for 6–8 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours until beans are tender and ham is falling off the bone.
  5. Remove ham hocks, shred meat, discard bones and excess fat, then return meat to the slow cooker.
  6. Stir in red wine vinegar, adjust seasoning, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Beans should be fork-tender but not disintegrating.
  • If broth reduces too much, add a small splash of warm stock.
  • Taste before adding extra salt, as ham hocks vary in saltiness.
  • For deeper flavor, allow beans to rest in the warm broth for 15–20 minutes before serving.
