Description
Slow Cooker Southern Green Beans simmer with smoky ham hocks, tender fresh beans, and savory broth for classic Southern comfort food. Perfect for Sunday dinner or holiday tables.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs fresh green beans, trimmed
- 2 smoked ham hocks
- 6 cups low-sodium chicken stock
- 2 teaspoons granulated garlic
- ¼ yellow onion, small diced
- ½ tablespoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes, or hot sauce to taste
- 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar, to taste
Instructions
- Trim and rinse green beans thoroughly.
- Add green beans, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes to the slow cooker.
- Place ham hocks on top and pour chicken stock over the mixture.
- Cook on LOW for 6–8 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours until beans are tender and ham is falling off the bone.
- Remove ham hocks, shred meat, discard bones and excess fat, then return meat to the slow cooker.
- Stir in red wine vinegar, adjust seasoning, and serve warm.
Notes
- Beans should be fork-tender but not disintegrating.
- If broth reduces too much, add a small splash of warm stock.
- Taste before adding extra salt, as ham hocks vary in saltiness.
- For deeper flavor, allow beans to rest in the warm broth for 15–20 minutes before serving.
