Description

Tender and juicy Slow Cooker French Onion Meatballs simmered in a rich caramelized onion gravy topped with melted cheese. The perfect comfort food for busy weeknights or entertaining.

Ingredients

  • 1 (32 oz) bag frozen meatballs (beef or turkey)
  • 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme (or 1 tablespoon fresh thyme)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, melt butter with olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring often, until caramelized and golden brown (about 20 minutes).

  2. Add garlic and cook for 1–2 minutes until fragrant.

  3. Place frozen meatballs into the slow cooker.

  4. Pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir in the caramelized onions.

  5. Cover and cook on low for 4–6 hours or high for 2–3 hours.

  6. About 10 minutes before serving, sprinkle shredded cheese on top. Cover and cook until melted.

  7. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or with crusty bread.

Notes

  • For homemade flavor, use freshly made meatballs instead of frozen.

  • Gruyère cheese gives the most authentic French onion flavor, but mozzarella, Swiss, or provolone also work well.

  • To prevent onions from burning, cook them low and slow when caramelizing.

  • Add a splash of cream at the end for a richer, creamier sauce.

  • Leftovers taste even better the next day once the flavors meld together.
