Description
Classic Homemade Orange Candy is made from fresh orange slices simmered in simple syrup until glossy, sweet, and chewy. Perfect for snacking, garnishing desserts, or gifting—easy, elegant, and naturally citrusy.
Ingredients
- 3–4 medium oranges, washed and sliced into ⅛–¼ inch rounds
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- Additional sugar for coating (optional)
Instructions
- Slice the Oranges:
Rinse oranges thoroughly. Slice into thin rounds, removing seeds. - Optional Blanching:
Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the orange slices and blanch for 1 minute. Drain and repeat once more to reduce bitterness. - Make the Sugar Syrup:
In a large skillet or wide pot, combine 2 cups sugar and 1 cup water. Heat over medium until sugar dissolves. - Simmer the Slices:
Add orange slices in a single layer. Reduce heat and simmer gently for 35–45 minutes, flipping occasionally, until translucent. - Dry the Candy:
Transfer slices to a wire rack placed over parchment. Let dry for 6–8 hours or overnight.
Optionally toss in extra sugar for a crystallized finish. - Serve or Store:
Once dry, enjoy immediately or store in an airtight container.
Notes
- Keep the syrup at a low simmer—boiling will cause the slices to break apart.
- Blanching oranges helps reduce bitterness, especially with thicker peels.
- Use a sharp knife or mandoline for clean, uniform slices.
- Dip dried slices in dark chocolate for a gourmet variation.
- Save the leftover citrus syrup for cocktails, tea, cakes, or lemonade.
