Ingredients
For the Blackberry Sauce:
- 1 quart fresh or frozen blackberries, rinsed
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp lemon extract
For the Dumplings:
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 2/3 cup milk
Instructions
- Combine blackberries, water, sugar, salt, and lemon extract in a saucepan. Simmer for 10-12 minutes until thickened, then remove from heat.
- Mix the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and nutmeg). Gradually add milk and stir until combined into dough.
- Drop spoonfuls of dumpling dough into the simmering sauce. Cover and cook for 10-12 minutes, allowing the dumplings to puff up.
- Serve warm with sauce poured over the dumplings. Garnish with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired.
Notes
- For a cinnamon twist, add a pinch of cinnamon to the dumpling dough.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days and reheated on the stove.
