Description

Crispy, golden mini blooming onions made easily in the air fryer. A delicious, lighter twist on the classic restaurant appetizer—perfect for parties, snacks, or dipping nights.

Ingredients

For the Blooming Onions

  • 4 small onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

1. Prepare the Onions

Peel the onions, trim the top, and keep the root intact. Slice into 8–12 sections without cutting through the root. Gently separate the “petals.”

2. Mix the Flour Coating

In a bowl, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

3. Make the Wet Dip

Whisk eggs and buttermilk together in a separate bowl.

4. Coat the Onions

Dust each onion in the flour mixture, spreading the petals apart. Dip in the egg mixture, then coat thoroughly with breadcrumbs.

5. Preheat the Air Fryer

Heat air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly coat the basket with cooking spray.

6. Air Fry

Place onions in the basket, spray the tops lightly, and cook 12–15 minutes or until golden and crispy.

7. Serve

Serve hot with ranch, chipotle mayo, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Make sure the onions are dry so the coating sticks well.
  • Double coat for extra crunch: flour → egg → flour → egg → breadcrumbs.
  • For spice, add cayenne or chili powder to the flour.
  • Avoid microwaving leftovers—use the air fryer to re-crisp.
